Built by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1591, Hyderabad is one of the biggest Metropolitan cities in southern India. Situated in the northern part of the Deccan plateau, on the banks of the Musi River, at an average altitude of 542 m (1,778 ft), much of Hyderabad is situated on hilly terrain around artificial lakes, including the Hussain Sagar lake, older even than the city. It served as the capitol of the Asaf Jahi dynasty, also known as the Nizams, from 1724 until 1948 when it joined the newly independent state but only after the Indian army had invaded!
The Old City lies to the South of the Musi river and many bridges connect the Old and the New such as the Purana Pul bridge built in 1578. The Old City is home to the famous palaces of Falaknuma, the Chowmahalla, the Purani Haveli to name just a few. The iconic Chowminar landmark and global symbol of Hyderabad was built by Qutb Shah to commemorate the eradication of a plague epidemic.
Surrounding the Chowminar lie all the ancient bazaars: the Pearl Market, Begum Bazaar, Moazzim Jahi Market, silk markets and Bridal dresses are exported all over the world.
‘Genome Valley’ or ‘Cyberabad’. Two of the names for Hyderabad recognising its status as "India's pharmaceutical capital" and the global centre of information technology located in HITEC City, a township home to many national and multinational companies employing over 400,000 people.
Opened in 2008 Hyderabad’s international gateway is already one of India’s busiest airports. With excellent road and rail links it is a short 30 minutes away from the city centre.
